 Professor Richard Read shows how the Byzantine Empire founded a new kind of art based on Christianity after it split off from the Roman Empire in the fifth Century AD.
The new art of the mosaic that graced the interiors of churches particularly at Ravenna, Italy, flattened the bodily art of Greek and Roman temples into glimmering interior decorations of exquisite colour, light and abstract mathematical order that expressed the oceanic effects of Christian mysticism.
