Philosophy Cafe: Freedom and Determinism | |

Event Type: Ideas Space - Philosophy Café Date: 11/10/2019 Start Time: 6:00 PM End Time: 7:00 PM Description: When one decides, for example, that one will borrow a book at the local library, that action seems to be free. However, science seems to tell us that events in nature are the effects of causal sequences or chains which determine them. The puzzle is that we ourselves are part of nature. Doesn't it follow, then, that our choices and our actions are the effects of causal sequences? And if it does, doesn't this mean that our choices and actions are not free? In this popular series, Assoc Prof Jordi Fernandez will introduce some classical formulations of this problem and discuss the significance of some recent findings in neuroscience for this problem.
